Bariatric Surgery is concerned with the evaluation and treatment of Morbid Obesity. It is usually done for weight loss, in patients with a BMI greater than 40 (BMI=kg/m2). Most of these operations are performed laparoscopically in a minimal invasive method leaving no evident scars.
The most common bariatric surgery procedures at Najjar Hospital are:
Roux-in-Y Gastric Bypass
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Gastric Banding
Gastric Bypass: also called Roux-in-Y Gastric Bypass, is a type of weight loss laparoscopic surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. The pouch can only take in a reduced amount of meals thus consuming less calories. After Gastric Bypass, swallowed food will go into this small pouch of stomach, and then directly into the small intestine, thereby bypassing most of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine.
Gastric Bypass is one of the most common times of Bariatric Surgery. It is usually done when diet and exercise haven’t worked, or when the patient has serious health problems due to weight.
Sleeve Gastrectomy: in another type of weight loss surgery that involves removing most of the stomach (70%/80%) to make it smaller. This results in the stomach taking the shape of a tube or “sleeve”, which holds much less of food.
Gastric Banding: a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band is placed around the entry of the stomach to reduce food consumption according to the eating capacities of the patient and intended degree of weight loss. It is considered the safest and least invasive procedure and the bariatric team at Najjar Hospital often highly recommend it for morbid obese patients.
